E&E News: House Republicans bet on deep cuts to climate credits

The House Ways and Means Committee unveiled legislation Monday to eliminate or phase out tax incentives from the Democrats’ 2022 climate law.
The bill is the cornerstone of a package meant to implement large parts of President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda. Republicans are using the budget reconciliation process to bypass the Senate filibuster.
[…] Trump has called for getting rid of what he is keen on calling the “Green New Scam.” But House Republican leaders have said for some time they intended to take a “scalpel” rather than a “sledgehammer” to the Inflation Reduction Act, which Democrats passed in 2022 without a single GOP vote.
Leaders have faced considerable pressure from clean energy companies and trade groups to protect at least some of the credits, which amount to hundreds of billions of dollars over a 10-year period.
“Congress’ first concrete move to dismantle the IRA’s clean energy tax credits makes one thing clear: The two dozen or so House Republicans who have championed these credits still have work to do,” said Democratic communications consultant Chris Moyer who represents energy clients. “Is this the best they could muster with their behind-the-scenes efforts?”
